North Australian Indigenous Land & Sea Management Alliance
The North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) was developed to coordinate and facilitate active management of country by Indigenous people across north Australia who share many circumstances, opportunities and threats in their every day lives on country. Currently the alliance includes the major Indigenous representative bodies across northern Australia including Kimberley Land Council, Northern Land Council, Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Cape York Balkanu Development Corporation and the Torres Strait Regional Authority.
•One of the major projects being undertaking by NAILSMA is the Natural Heritage Trust funded Dugong and Marine Turtle Management Project. The project aims to develop and strengthen capacity of Indigenous communities to guide and implement dugong and marine turtle management and monitoring at the on-county level. The impact of discarded fishing gear, especially ghost nets, on marine wildlife is of great concern to many indigenous people around the north Australian coastline and hence the problem of ghost nets is common to both the NAILSMA project and the Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme. To ensure the most effective delivery of each program and to maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits to Indigenous participants, NAILSMA is a partner to the Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme and represented on the Project Steering Committee. Similarly, the Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme is a member of the NAILSMA projects Technical Reference Group and several Indigenous communities participate in both programs.
