Northern Gulf Resource Management Group
This is one of many projects funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT2). NHT1 was known as either Landcare, Coastcare, Bushcare, Fishcare or Rivercare, depending on the issue at hand. The difference between NHT1 & 2 is that the former focused on small local issues such as tree planting. The new model focuses on larger regional & cross regional issues as well as the local ones.
To help manage these regional issues the nation was divided into groups, called Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups centred on river catchments with similar biodiversity. There are 15 in Queensland. This project is one of many managed by the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group (NGRMG) based in Georgetown.
The NGRMG covers a region shown on the map that incorporates the catchments for the Norman, Gilbert, Staatan & Mitchell Rivers; from Mareeba to Karumba, from Laura to Burke & Wills. It is made up of representatives from all the industries (fishing, mining, grazing & tourism), community groups (Barra Farm, Progress associations, Landcare groups, fishing clubs), indigenous, local governments (all five in this region) and environmental organisations who have an interest in managing our natural resources in the region. To be a member of the NGRMG all we ask is that you are a resident of the region.
The Carpentaria Ghost Nets Programme is a cross-regional project as it encompasses 4 of these regional groups across two states encompassing the focus of the project, the Gulf of Carpentaria.
