How to Support GhostNets Australia?
GhostNets Australia supports the communities of northern Australia to deal with the ghost net problem themselves in their own region. There are many ways in which you can help us to help them.
Get Involved in a Clean up
All volunteers for GhostNets Australia are facilitated through Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA). GhostNets Australia has a three marine debris cleanup and monitoring events in the Northern Territory scheduled with CVA for 2011.
Alternatively, sign up for a World Expeditions tour in Arnhem Land which is a combination marine rescue and clean up activity.

ALL SPONSORSHIPS OVER $1,000 DURING 2011 WILL RECEIVE A UNIQUE GIFT OF A GHOSTNET GEAR TURTLE MADE BY ANGELA TORENBEEK OF MOA ISLAND, TORRES STRAITS (PICTURED AT RIGHT).
Sponsoring many of the activities carried out by GhostNets Australia will help us to clean up the northern Australian environment as well as improve the social, cultural and economical fabric of the region as well. Outlined below are some of our major activities with their average costs. For information on how you can help and how in return we can help you contact us via email.
Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation
Occasionally the wildlife caught in the nets are very seriously injured, although still alive. When we find marine turtles injured in this way we need to heli-vac them to the nearest rehabilitation centre, often thousands of kilometers away from the stranding site, as well as provide for up to six months care. Once the turtles are ready for release back into the wild we ship them back to where they were found and attach satellite transmitters to them prior to release so that we can monitor their recovery.
Cost: $5,000 - $10,000

Indigenous Rangers Managing their Coastline
Many of the beaches in northern Australia are prone to annual influxes of nets which vary according to weather patterns. Cyclones (Hurricanes) in particular wash up incredible amounts of marine debris. After their first clean sweep of their region, removing accumulated marine debris, the rangers undergo regular patrols to manage the problem. These patrols involve removing new nets, rescuing stranded wildlife and collecting information that will help them to know the best times to target the patrols to minimize the damage. As most of this region is extremely remote with limited road access, getting to these isolated places by vessel is usually governed by the weather.
Average Cost/ patrol = $1,000
AverageCost/ Clean Sweep = $10,000 - $15,000
Average Cost /ranger group/annum = $20,000

GhostNet Gear Workshops
The GhostNet Gear project is facilitated at workshops in each participating community by professional fibre, textile and sculpture artists. These workshops focus on gathering material (beachcombing), transferring traditional weaving and other craft techniques into this contemporary medium (plastic) and brainstorming ideas. Outcomes form the workshops are the development of new skills to create both merchandise and exhibition quality art pieces. In less than two years these highly acclaimed pieces have been exhibited in most of the capital cities in Australia, purchased by the National Museum and overseas collectors.
Average cost/workshop = $15,000

Sponsorship over $15,000 for one of these workshops will give you the opportunity to receive your choice of any piece up to the value of $2,000 as a thank you from us.
